Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) was one of the twentieth century’s most important and critically acclaimed sculptors. Through a lifetime of artistic experimentation, he created sculptures, gardens, furniture and lighting designs, ceramics, architecture, and set designs. His work, at once subtle and bold, traditional and modern, set a new standard for the reintegration of the arts. In 1937 he designed a Bakelite intercom for the Zenith Radio Corporation, and in 1947, his glass-topped table was produced by Herman Miller. This design—along with others such as his designs for Akari Light Scazulptures which was developed in 1951 using traditional Japanese materials—are still being produced today.
This classic table authorized by the Isamu Noguchi Foundation was originally created in 1944. The brilliantly simple design consists of only three elements, the glass top and two interlocking wood base pieces. The table is an extraordinary harmony of form and function. Made by the table's original manufacturer, Herman Miller.
Noguchi himself described his Coffee Tabl as his best furniture design, no doubt because it is extremely reminiscent of his bronze and marble sculptures of the time. The glass table top rests on two identical varnished wooden elements placed at right angles.
